چکیده

The paper describes different methods devoted to the reproduction of sound source directivity. Although being dedicated to different application domains, they are based on similar physical modelling and rely on array technology driven by signal processing. In the first approach, a 3D array of transducers laid out on the facets of a polyhedron is controlled in order to radiate sound according to the simulated source. A dual approach, where the transducer array is now distributed around the audience uses WFS in order to create a sound field similar to the one that would have been generated by the virtual source. These two approaches are compared, in their respective application domains, in terms of reproduction accuracy of the direct sound and associated room effect, joined recording technique, practical implementation and flexibility.

Rendering of virtual sound sources with arbitrary directivity in higher order Ambisonics

Higher order Ambisonics (HOA) is a spatial audio reproduction technique aiming at physically synthesizing a desired sound field. It is based on the expansion of sound fields into orthogonal basis functions (spatial harmonics). In this paper we present an approach to the two-dimensional reproduction of virtual sound sources at arbitrary positions having arbitrary radiation directivities. The app...

Comparison of Higher-Order Ambisonics, Vector- and Distance-Based Amplitude Panning using a hearing device beamformer

The main advantages and drawbacks of Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA) versus Vector-Based Amplitude Panning (VBAP) for 3D audio sound reproduction are well documented. However, few studies focused on the effect of 3D audio reproduction artifacts and errors on the behaviour of hearing devices. This study compares the effect of HOA, VBAP, and Distance-Based Amplitude Panning (DBAP) sound reproductio...

The Future of Audio Reproduction - Technology - Formats - Applications

The introduction of new techniques for audio reproduction such as binaural technology, Wave Field Synthesis and Higher Order Ambisonics is accompanied by a paradigm shift from channel-based to object-based transmission and storage of spatial audio. The separate coding of source signal and source location is not only more efficient considering the number of channels used for reproduction by larg...

Virtual Acoustics and 3-d Sound in Multimedia Signal Processing

In this work, aspects in real-time modeling and synthesis of three-dimensional sound in the context of digital audio, multimedia, and virtual environments are studied. The concept of virtual acoustics is discussed, which includes models for sound sources, room acoustics, and spatial hearing. Real-time virtual acoustics modeling is carried out using a real-time parametric room impulse response r...

An overview of directivity control methods of the parametric array loudspeaker

A sound reproduction system usually consists of several types of loudspeakers to cater to sophisticated applications. The directivity of a loudspeaker is a measure of its efficiency in sending sounds to a particular direction instead of all directions. Demand to control the directivity of a sound reproduction system is gaining momentumwith many new designs of directional loudspeakers, including...
